Outdoor Lighting Design and Landscape Lighting in Melbourne

Garden lighting designed with the planting, paving and view from the house, then installed as part of the build. For new gardens and for established gardens being redesigned.

Garden Lighting Design and Installation Across Melbourne

A garden changes after dark. The shapes simplify, the colour drains out of the planting and the texture takes over. A tree trunk lit from below turns into a column. The grain of a stone wall shows up in a way it never does at midday. From the kitchen window, the garden you spent all that time on is either there at nine o’clock at night or it disappears.

The usual approach is to add lighting at the end, once the paving is down and the cables have nowhere to go. What you get is a row of spikes along the path, a floodlight on the back wall and very little in between.

We design landscape lighting at the same time as the garden. Which trees get lit, how the steps are made safe, where the light falls on the table and what you see from inside are decided with the planting plan, so the conduit goes in under the paving and the fittings sit where the design needs them. Then our own team installs the lighting as part of the build.

Lighting is always part of a wider garden design or redesign rather than a job on its own. That includes established gardens, where the planting has grown in and the owners realise they never see it after dark. When we rework a garden like that, the lighting is designed into the new layout from the start.

How We Design Outdoor Lighting

Good garden lighting is mostly about restraint. Fewer fittings, placed with care and aimed at the right things, do more than a lot of light spread evenly. These are the layers we design with.

Trees, planting and feature lighting

Uplighting a tree gives the garden height at night and pulls the eye to the back of the block. Grazing light across grasses or a textured wall picks out movement and grain. We choose which plants to light when we choose the plants, so a feature tree or a sculptural shrub gets a fitting sized for how big it will grow.

Paths, steps and safety lighting

Some light has a job to do. Steps need to be read in the dark, paths need to be followed and the side of the house needs to be walkable with the bins. Low, shielded fittings set into walls, steps and edges light the ground without shining in anyone’s eyes.

Entertaining areas and outdoor dining

Light over a table should flatter the people around it. We design softer, warmer light for decks, pergolas and outdoor entertaining areas, often on a zone of its own, so it can be switched off once dinner is done and the rest of the garden takes over.

Water features, pools and reflection

Still water at night holds whatever is lit around it. Lighting the planting behind a pond, rather than the water itself, gives you the reflection without the glare. In our Kew Canopy garden, garden lighting was designed with a reflection pond that winds down the side of the house, so both read after dark.

Facades, walls and architecture

A few fittings washing light up a facade or across a rendered wall give a house presence from the street. It’s one of the simplest ways to make a front garden feel finished, and it helps with security without resorting to floodlights.

Colour, glare and your neighbours

Warm white light suits planting, timber and stone, and keeps the garden feeling calm. We aim fittings away from windows and boundaries, shield them to cut glare and keep the light where it’s wanted, which matters in Melbourne’s tighter inner suburbs.

Installation, power and controls

We plan the power supply, transformers and cable runs as part of the design, and lay conduit during construction so nothing has to be dug up later. Our team installs the fittings and cabling, and a licensed electrician connects the system to a switch inside the house. Lighting is split into zones, so the path lights can be on while the feature lighting stays off until you want it. We’ll advise on when each zone is best run, and any timers or smart controls are yours to set and adjust from there.

Our Outdoor Lighting Design Process

Consultation

We meet to talk about how you use the garden at night, what you want to see from inside and where light is needed for safety. Once we understand the scope, we prepare a proposal with a clear design fee.

Site Inspection

We carry out a full site analysis and inventory, assessing the assets and limitations of your space. Existing trees and structures, power supply, views from the house, neighbouring windows and where cables can run all shape the lighting design, so it works with your site rather than against it.

Quote

Once the concept is agreed, we prepare full construction documentation and a written specification, then provide a detailed quote. You know exactly what your project involves and what it costs before any work starts.

Why Choose Luma Landscapes for Your Garden Lighting

FAQs

It depends on how many fittings the design needs, the fittings themselves, cable runs, access and the scope of the wider garden work. We don’t publish a rate, because a small courtyard and a large garden with feature trees are very different jobs. You get a detailed, written quote once the design is agreed.
Warm white LED fittings, shielded and aimed at specific features, suit most gardens. They show off planting and stone without glare, and they use very little power. The best result comes from lighting a few things well, such as a tree, a wall and the steps, rather than lighting everything evenly.
Yes, as part of a wider garden redesign. We don’t take on lighting as a standalone job, because it works best designed with the planting, paving and structures around it. When we rework an established garden, we design the lighting around the trees and planting that are staying and plan cable routes into the new layout. Established gardens often look best lit, because the trees and planting have grown in.
Before, or at the same time. Planning it with the garden means conduit goes under the paving during construction, fittings sit where the design needs them and there is power where you want it later.
Very little. LED fittings last for years. The main job is keeping planting trimmed back from fittings and, if you’ve added a timer, checking it after daylight saving changes.
The design phase usually takes two to six weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the project. Installation time depends on the site and the scope, and you get a timeline together with your quote.
